RRHA HOSTS KEY PRESENTATION EVENT FOR NEW RESIDENTS AT CREIGHTON COURT  & UNVEILS NEW COMMUNITY NAME

RICHMOND, VA— The Richmond Redevelopment and Housing Authority (RRHA) in partnership with The Community Builders (TCB), and the City of Richmond will deliver new homes September 16.  These new residents represent former Creighton residents, voucher holders from across the waitlist, and individuals moving into tax credit apartment homes. These newly constructed units at the newly revitalized Creighton Court signal progress  that is long overdue and highlights the most significant redevelopment of public housing in the city of Richmond in over a decade! The lease-up event to  celebrate this milestone will be held Tuesday, September 16, 2025 at 10 a.m. within the Creighton Court community at 2101 Creighton Road under the tent in open field area between Coach Mickey Alley and Tate Road.

Financial support for this closing came from the City of Richmond, Virginia Housing, Bank of America, Department of Housing and Community Development and RRHA.

Not only will keys be presented to Richmonders moving into their new homes, attendees will also hear the announcement of the new name of the Creighton community. The process for choosing a new name was done by voting from both current and former Creighton residents up to three years removed.  The final selection committee included representatives from the Resident Tenant Organization, The Community Builders, NAACP, RRHA and Creighton residents.

RRHA CEO Steven Nesmith has been working diligently on several fronts to bring affordable housing online. He added,

“We are excited about this opportunity to put keys in the hands of former public housing residents, RRHA voucher holders and others in the city who need affordable housing. This is a huge win for RRHA, the families who will occupy these beautiful homes, the City of Richmond and the region. Creighton Court stands as a shining example of what happens when partners and stakeholders come together to tackle the affordable housing crisis in this city.” He further specified, “Access to affordable housing for RRHA residents is the catalyst that our communities need to elevate families into the working and the middle class. All the units in this development are “affordable” and Creighton Court is just the beginning.”

These initial 68 units mark the completion of Phase A. Following this Phase, there will be an additional 72 units in Phase B. Creighton’s Tenant Bill of Rights gives priority to Creighton Court residents who have elected to remain on site while construction is taking place, or they can return and using their project-based voucher.

“The Community Builders is proud to deliver on the first phase of the Creighton Court transformation. This milestone marks our continued commitment on the promise of a stronger Creighton Court neighborhood ensuring that Richmond residents and their families have accessible and affordable options,” said Beth Kennan, The Community Builder’s Director of Development for Virginia.
